In the summer of 2019, we completed the delivery of five hydrocyclones arranged in parallel to facilitate the removal of solid particles from groundwater at a power plant in North Holland.
The groundwater, when pumped, contained a significant amount of solids and sand that the energy company aimed to eliminate. After an extensive three-quarters-of-a-year-long process involving quoting, laboratory-scale testing, and positive results from bypass flow testing, JMF-Filters BV was ultimately awarded the order. Internally, we configured the five cyclone separators within two Manifolds. Subsequently, a start-up procedure and a five-day testing period were conducted. Following minor adjustments and fine-tuning, the filtration project was successfully delivered to the satisfaction of the client.
A water cyclone functions as a centrifugal separator, effectively separating solid, undissolved particles from the liquid or water based on their mass. This separation occurs through the application of centrifugal force. The liquid, usually water, is rapidly swirled, causing heavier particles to descend under the influence of gravity and centrifugal force. The efficiency of solid-liquid separation can be fine-tuned based on the density of the solid and liquid, adjusted through rotation speed.
Hydrocyclones are particularly well-suited for processing large water volumes in a short timeframe, and they occupy minimal space, providing a notable advantage over centrifuges. Unlike centrifuges, hydrocyclones have no moving parts; instead, centrifugal force and vortex are initiated by the speed and pressure of incoming water. Cyclone separators, such as hydrocyclones, are commonly employed for desanding applications (sand-water separation).
